BEHIND THE SCENES: Taking on an Overseas Contract… Working at Universal Studios Singapore with Michael Stone (AKA Alex The Lion)
As many of you may know, here at HQ we have been involved with the Universal Studios Singapore Auditions in Australia with PJ being appointed as Casting Consultant. SO… the team have toured the nation and scoped out the talent which has been great! We thought we’d also track down one of the Aussie’s currently working for Universal in Singapore and see what it’s really like!
Tell us a bit about your role at Universal Studios Singapore…
My role at Universal Studios Singapore is in Entertainment as an Animated Street Star, where I play the character Alex The Lion in the Madagascar Show.
Along with the other characters Gloria, King Julian and the four Penguins, we perform in the show and do “Meet and Greets” with park guests.
I started my contract in November of 2009 and ends in November 2010. At the start we went straight into training and rehearsal as a big group then We had about three months rehearsal and training before moving over and finally getting to see the park for the very first time in late January. (The park is brand new!)
What’s it like living in Singapore? What are the challenges?
Living in Singapore is very good, it took a little time to get used to but I love it here. There are no big houses – there are lots of blocks of flats to fit lots of people!
There is nice food with so many places to eat 24/7! Getting around is easy (lots of cabs – it’s a small place so it’s quite cheap), there are tourist attractions and also great clubs and restaurants for your down time.
The most challenging part is…. Well you do miss your family and friends, but you make new family and friends here and that will help you a lot. The people I work with are great everyone is nice no matter where you’re from.
But I think for me, moving away from Australia has helped me with my life… being only 20 I have learnt many skills living away from home and handling any problems without Mum or Dad there. Singapore is an easy country to live in and I love it! The weather can get really hot and stuffy at times but it grows on you and you get used to it.
What are your main responsibilities?
My responsibilities are to make sure that I do my very best during every set and show and to entertain the guests in the park.
It’s important to be at work on time and to not be hung over or over-tired! Behind the sense it is my responsibility to help the dressers with putting on and taking off my costume and letting them know of any problems with the costume so that they can be fixed, and making sure I represent Universal as best possible when working or visiting the park.
Describe a typical day at work for you there…
I leave for work at 9.30am for a 10.30am call time. If our call time is 10.30am our first show is an hour later (so 11.30am).
After arriving at work you first must tap in to register your time of arrival, then you prepare your “blacks” (things to go under the costume) for the day. At 11am you start to dress into blacks then check you have all parts for your costume…. Mine being, Alex The Lion. There are 10 different parts to Alex alone. Alex has the most parts and Shrek is close to that as well with 8 different parts….
So after you have done your checking it is then time to get ready, allowing 15 minutes before show time. There are dressers and escorts there to help you dress.
Once dressed its SHOW TIME! Show times on a normal day are 11.30am, 1pm, 3pm, 4.30pm, 6pm, with lunch from 1.30pm till 2.30pm. On Set it’s a short walk to stage with escorts acting as security and clearing the way through crowds.
Once we are at the stage, the music starts and it’s our first number: “I LIKE TO MOVE IT, MOVE IT”. After the dance is complete it is then straight into a photo taking session called “Meet and Greet” for 15mins, then back to stage for a closing number, followed by waving goodbye and getting back to the green room where you take off the costume and relax for an hour before getting ready to do it all again!
What’s the best part of the job?
The best part is seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter of guests, listening to them clap and cheer through and after the shows, watching my fellow casts do the show and seeing all the other shows in between my shows and on my breaks.
Working for Universal Studios is fantastic - lots of fun and a great experience. And everyone here loves Aussies!!!
